COACHING CORNER

Last issue we discussed one of the biggest hindrances to motivation – fear. You may have even found the courage to begin changing a particular area of your life – congratulations!

Here are some practical tips to keeping the momentum going:

Break your goals down. I always suggest starting with a 3 month goal. It is a realistic time frame and easier to stay focused than a longer term goal. Of course, the 3 mth goalmay be part of a larger goal. e.g. a 12 mth goal might be to be self-employed in the field of your dreams. The first 3 month goal might be to have completed a detailed business plan.

Be clear about what you want. Create a vision for yourself - write a list, make a collage, write a letter to yourself about the benefit the change will bring to your life. Make sure you see this list/collage etc regularly.

Tell someone. There is power in sharing your goals and dreams, but a word of warning – make sure it's someone who is positive and encouraging, not someone who will be critical of you or your idea.

Get some help. Enlist the regular support of a friend, family member or coach. It needs to be someone who is able to be independent and who you know will help hold you accountable.

Set yourself a reward – or series of rewards. I have a client who has a goal to lose 10 kg. She has made a list of rewards for each kilo lost eg having a pedicure, buying a new book, going away for a weekend and ultimately spending $500 on new clothes! Her rewards are personal to her and are an external motivation to help her stay on track.

Be realistic. You need to accept that levels of motivation change from day to day, with changes in hormones and with the weather! You will not bounce out of bed EVERY day with bundles of energy, but what is more important is the general trend of your level of motivation.

QUOTE

What is coaching? (for more FAQ's about coaching see www.livingedge.net)

Answer: Coaching is a practical, action oriented process that is a catalyst to amazing change! It is working with you to set inspiring goals.... and achieving them! It is not magic. It requires hard work and commitment, but when you spend time focusing on and working towards your goals, you CAN achieve them.
