    RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM

Add in intro - what is the RAS give car example etc.  Adapt info so not copied straight from Barry Grant

Maybe don't use RAS, visualisation and affirmations all in one newsletter  - could be 3 different ones.  find some pictures that support etc.

If you set goals/affirmations it will activate what's called your Reticular Activating System (RAS).

Your brain is inundated with messages from every part of your body, too much information for you to handle on the conscious level. To save you from overload you have a filter called the Reticular Activating System. This is a netlike group of cells that monitors messages to your brain. The only information that it allows through to your consciousness is what you have decided is of importance to you or a threat.

When you give yourself a goal (or affirmation), information pertaining to that goal is allowed to get through. Without a goal the brain will block information that could have been important to you.

From this piece of physiological information arises an important principle:

The goal comes first and then you will see.

    You do not see first.

To make use of this system we need to have belief without evidence. You set the goal first then you will be able to see the information you need to achieve that goal.

It will work with any goal, a career, degree, vision or job. You visualise what you want and suddenly information which will help you achieve this goal will begin to appear. This is an important concept to understand as it is essential to achieving goals, we need to know “what we want” before we can become aware of “how to get it”.

In order for the RAS to work two factors are necessary. Firstly, the goal must be as specific and clear as possible otherwise the system will not be tuned accurately enough to pick up the information. Secondly you must make yourself personally accountable so that you become aware of every sign and opportunity to reach your goal.

It is not enough to be familiar with these concepts. You must practice them. Start with a list of small things you want. See how it works, then move on to bigger goals

 VISUALIZATION

Seeing in your "mind's eye".

Since affirmations are working with restructuring thinking patterns, it is essential that the mind "see" you being, doing, or having what you choose.

When you are visualizing a change in your life you are not "just day dreaming!" Rather, with intention, you are reprogramming yourself to create a whole new you.

Use the following steps to achieve the maximum results:

  • Choose a specific time during the day to visualize. The best time is before going to sleep and upon awakening. Ten minutes is sufficient.
  • Make sure you are relaxed, calm and centered.
  • Allow a smile to come over your face, as you see the new you doing and acting in the desired way. While you visualize, let your body relax into all of the joyous feelings that this new way of being engenders.
  • To conclude your visualization, repeat your affirmation silently to yourself, and then voice it privately out loud.

    AFFIRMATIONS:

An affirmation is a positive statement that you make to replace whatever negative or limiting thoughts you may have about yourself and your world. The best way to work on an affirmation is:

  • Write each affirmation several times (at least 7). Writing is a very powerful technique; write this way: I (insert your name) , deserve to be happy.
  • Write each affirmation shortly before going to sleep.
  • Say each affirmation privately, out loud.
  • Say the affirmations in front of a mirror, looking into your eyes, with a smile on your face.
  • Put the affirmations on a tape and play them while driving.
  • Continue working with your affirmations until you feel that they have become a part of you, and you believe them totally.
  • When you catch yourself saying a negative statement aloud or to yourself, such as, "I'm so stupid", "I know I'll mess up", or "I'll never have that," replace the negative with what you want, such as, "I'm smart", "I can do it well" or "I'll have that!"
  • Get them laminated and hang them in the shower!
