Welcome to Volume 21 of Living on the Edge, the fortnightly newsletter from Living Edge Life Coaching, designed to inform, educate, challenge and inspire you! For previous volumes click here. This week I am heading to Sydney for a coaching conference. I'm looking forward to refining my coaching skills and learning some new tools. Over the next few newsletters I'll be able to share with you what I've learnt. This is the first time I've featured an article written by someone else. I hope you enjoy what my husband has written! IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU!
There are many television commercials that make me wonder what happens in the mind of a marketer. Indeed in our predominantly capitalist society, such a person is compelled to dig deep into the psyche of the consumer with little regard for broader consequences. Think prepubescent models, think fast food, think Hollywood, think a particular commercial whose tag is 'the most important person in the world ... you' The fact a national bank produced this commercial is ironic for the purpose of a modern bank is usury, ie to keep you in debt. OK, so I just lost you there, what has a commercial, designed by well resourced marketers, about making me No 1 got to do with debt. Life and Relationships are like a bank. Every time I choose to give, be it I say to my wife, 'I love you' with no ulterior motive, I make a deposit into a bank in this case the marriage bank. If I act with selfish motivation, I withdraw from that bank. Choosing to make more withdrawals than deposits will put you into debt with the bank, whether that bank be the parent bank, marriage bank, work bank, boss bank.... When you are in debt, you will find you need interest repayments just to maintain the status quo, make too many withdrawals, and you find yourself bankrupt. |
Let me make a simple point. Life is not about you! The more you seek after yourself, the less content you will be. The more you focus on you, the less you will like yourself. There is truth in a Christian saying, 'Those that find their life will lose it, and those that lose their life will find it'. Instead of seeking self, be amazed by the power of putting others before yourself. Build up your relational bank accounts. Soon the compounding interest will make you relationship rich! Lets try an experiment. Spend the next week putting yourself last. Drive your partner to the airport instead of making them catch a cab, even if it makes you late for work (ed: thanks); Share the packet of minties with your co workers; lend your car to your friend, sponsor a child. Let your imagination go. |

FEEDBACK | |
|
Over half of the responses I received from the last newsletter were from men.... and not surprisingly very positive! Actually I was very impressed at the number of men who asked for another copy of the tips for them to please their women. If you missed either of those newsletters, click on the links below: | |
