COACHING CORNER

2004, the year of ...

For me 2003 could aptly be described as '2003, the year of the baby' or '2003, the year of moving house'.  I wonder what this year is going to bring for me and my new little family.  I am actually hoping that it might be something like '2004, the year of stability'!!  After the last few years of all sorts of changes - states, house, careers, marital status, house, baby, house etc, I am ready to have a slightly quieter year as far as major changes go.

What is 2004 going to be like for you?  Have you thought about it?  Do you need some major change because things have been stagnant for a while? Maybe you've been making some changes to your life and you need to just persevere and wait to see the fruit of your labours.  Whatever you are looking forward to this year, here are a few hints to get you going:

  • make 2004 the year of massive action - quit pretending you are making changes. Make them.  This might mean significant changes.  So make them.  Don't forget massive action can be broken down into little steps.
  • Get goals and make a plan.  You know the adage - "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail".  There's a lot of truth in that!
  • expect the unexpected - you really just never know what the year ahead is going to bring do you?  You should plan and action your plans, but allow for some spontaneity, allow for the unforeseen because it will happen!
  • get help if you need it.  I have a tendency to get a bad back and it keep flaring up since I had Alexander.  I need help and am getting it - am going to a chiropractor, doing pilates and will swim.  When it get's stronger I'll re-employ my personal trainer at the gym.  Where-ever you need help for you to succeed, don't be afraid to seek it out.
  • take time to reflect - learn what it is that you are being taught in your life circumstances this year.  Perhaps start a new journal or take a few more walks in the park.  Don't let the whole year just pass by without having learnt from it.

I look forward to providing you with thought provoking and informative newsletters to help you keep Living on the Edge throughout 2004.  I am open to comments and suggestions email coach@livingedge.net

CLIENT FOCUS

This year, I'd love to introduce you to some of my clients.  You can start to get a feel for what difference having a coach can make to your life.  You don't always have to employ a professional coach - you could team up with a friend and coach each other.  Having someone to help you along in your life's journey can be one of the best things you can do.

Not all people want to be identified, however permission has been given by everyone referred to.

Coaching clients come in all different shapes, sizes and ages.  I have coached people from 18 to in their 60s - there is certainly no age restriction!

At the end of last year I finished a 12 week coaching program with a lovely lady in her 50s.  Here are some of the things she had to say when the program was over....

I have the ability and more importantly growing confidence to make significant change in my life. Setting goals, taking small steps, and actually seeing results has replaced frustration. I now have a deep understanding and acceptance that change in my life will not always be met with ‘positive’ responses from those around me. Deep within I so far have been able to say that is OK. Goal setting is going to make things happen in my life, it is NOT too late, and I am going to live it and enjoy it. I am grateful and humbled for this having been facilitated in my journey.

I continue to be in awe of your ability to undertake this journey with a client – remaining totally professional – and yet feeling a deep personal bond of friendship with you. I feel your journey with other clients would be parallel to mine. I believe you have a God given gift which you are using in an unusual but very significant way.

Though it was not my personal investment I rate the course excellent value for money and would recommend it.

GOT A QUESTION?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

If you have a question or situation that you would like a life coach's perspective on... email it to coach@livingedge.net and I'll answer in Living on the Edge.

If you're remarkable, then it's likely that some people won't like you. That's part of the definition of remarkable. Nobody gets unanimous praise - ever. The best the timid can hope for is to be unnoticed. Criticism comes to those who stand out.
