COACHING CORNER

 Waiting....waiting....waiting....

As I write, I sit, and wait.  And wait. And wait.  By the time I send this newsletter I hope to have stopped waiting.   9 months of waiting is a long time I have decided and the last couple of days past my 'due date' are probably some of the worst.  Will it be today? Then I wake up the next morning, cross another day off my calendar and ask the same question... I will it be today?

Why is it that the 'developing patience' test comes through waiting?!  It's cruel I reckon.  Is there anyone out there that is good at waiting?  I suspect that I'm not the only one that struggles with this one!  So, what do we do?  What can we learn from the waiting game and what can we do to pass the time?  I've come up with 10 ideas... I welcome other suggestions! (email them to coach@livingedge.net and I'll publish for other's to enjoy)

  1. Realise that there is an end point - well usually... depending on what you are waiting for!  It might mean waiting longer that we'd like, but normally waiting comes to an end.
  2. Waiting teaches you not to wish your life away - how many of us are always waiting for the relationship, the job, the perfect body? If you keep doing that you'll never actually appreciate what you've got now and make the most of it.
  3. Enjoy the moment - I have been trying really hard to enjoy my last few weeks of just being 'me' (and 'us').  I've been going out for coffee, reading books, catching up with friends, my husband and I have been out for a drive and for dinner trying to make the most of being together.
  4. Waiting develops patience - patience is a virtue - be grateful you're acquiring it!
  5. Mean's you're wise - It says in the book of Proverbs "A man's (woman's) wisdom gives him (her) patience" - I take it then that if I am patient, I am wise - being wise is another great quality.
  1. Waiting is character building - I don't know the number of times things haven't worked out how I'd planned and Mum would say "it's character building!" - as much as those words are aweful to hear at the time - they are true!
  1. Waiting gives you time to think - we don't usually set aside thinking time.  Next time you're in the doctor's surgery ('cos let face it - you ALWAYS have to wait there!) instead of reading 5 year old trashy magazines... use the time to think.
  2. Is what you're waiting for really worth it? In my case I certainly hope so, because I can't change it!  But think about what you are waiting for - is it worth the wait?  If so keep waiting, if not, change your focus!
  3. Share your experience - talk to others.  Might not only make the waiting go faster, but it may also make you realise that there are other people are in similar situations which can be a relief!
  4. Let out the frustration. Let's face it - sometimes it helps to just let out the frustration associated with waiting.  Just let it out in a productive way - go to a kick boxing class,  play 'bash the crabs' (good Timezone game!), go for a run or write in your journal.

Good luck with your waiting!

PS Thanks for waiting for this newsletter - about 2 weeks late coinciding with the lateness of my little son!

ALEXANDER JACK

Finally, 2 weeks late, Alexander Jack was born on Monday 11 August 2003 at 8.51pm after a long labour and emergency c-section.  Weighing in at 8lb9oz (3.9kg) and 52 cm long. Wasn't fun but he's worth it!

GOT A QUESTION?

QUOTE

If you have a question or situation that you would like a life coach's perspective on... email it to coach@livingedge.net and I'll answer in Living on the Edge.

ERROR in Vol 10: the website for the personality test is www.keirsey.com - got the 'e' and 'i' mixed up - sorry for any confusion!

There is nothing in the world that people so much thrive upon, grow fine and rosy and robust upon... as being loved.
